Mathilda and the Orange Balloon

Sheep Week Day 5
Balloon Ping Pong from The Weekend Homemaker.

If you want something quick, fun, and easy to do you have to try this balloon ping pong!  I saw a picture of this on Pinterest from The Weekend Homemaker and had the perfect sheep book to go along with it, Mathilda and the Orange Balloon by Randall de Seve and illustrated by Jen Corace.

Mathilda and the Orange Balloon is about a little gray sheep who is surrounded by her small, gray, green world until one day when she is out in the field grazing and spies an orange balloon.  Mathilda says she is like an orange balloon.  All of the sheep laugh at her and say that she is just a gray sheep.  The other sheep try to prove Mathilda wrong.  When the sheep tell her that a balloon is round, she shows that she is also round.  When the sheep tell her that the balloon is orange, she pretends to be a fierce, orange tiger.  In the end, Mathilda realizes that she can be anything she wants!

Before I shared this book with my three year old we played balloon ping pong...with an orange balloon, of course!  Since my boys love keeping a balloon off of the ground, I knew that they would love this.  Adding the home made paddle made it that much more fun!
For balloon ping pong, I needed 2 paint mixing sticks, 2 paper plates, a hot glue gun, and a balloon.  We also had our book and a piece of orange construction paper.  I hot glued the stick to the plates.  Hot glue dries so quickly that we were able to play right away.

We also cut out the orange paper to look like Mathilda from our book and taped it to the balloon. I told my son we were going to help Mathilda fly through the air.
My son chased a floating Mathilda all around the room.

He laughed the whole time we played and my daughter was even amused by the floating balloon. It was a great activity to work on hand and eye coordination.  The balloon moved slow enough that he could keep an eye on it.

After trying to get a couple of action shots, I decided to put my camera down and join in on the fun.  We had a blast!
After playing for a good amount of time, we finally read Mathilda and the Orange Balloon.

My son certainly enjoyed the pictures!  I enjoyed the message in the book; with a little imagination and determination you can do anything!  That message was one that my three year old won't understand for a while, but with Mathilda you get a book that both you and your child can enjoy on different levels!  And, a book like that is always a book worth reading!
