Flower Garden

Planting and Gardening Week

We have been working on this "rainbow of flowers project" for a couple days this week and we had such a great time being outside, choosing our flowers, and planting together.

Flower Garden written by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Kathryn Hewitt is a beautiful book about all of the things a young girl does so she can give her mother a flower box for her birthday.  This story takes place in the city, so the reader follows the little girl from the store, to the bus, and home to her apartment.   The pictures are beautiful and the angle that each picture is drawn from makes each page interesting. The words are simple, easy rhyming, and a good reading challenge for beginning readers. This is a great book for my kindergartner to read on his own with a little help, of course.  In fact, my kindergartner has been reading it every night this week.

Yesterday, we went to the nursery and bought flowers.  The boys have been wanting to pick out some flowers to plant for a while, but I have been too worried about the frost.  I finally caved and let them both pick out flowers.  We decided to get one little pot of flowers for each color of the rainbow.  I wish I would have remembered my camera at the nursery because the boys had a wonderful time running up and down the greenhouse tents, looking for flowers.

Our trip to the nursery resulted in a flower of every color of the rainbow and pink.

My kindergartner started planting with his yellow snapdragons.

When my three year old came home he was eager to plant his flowers in the front yard.

The next day, we finished planting our rainbow of flowers.

My kindergartner taught us that plants need sunlight, water, and soil to grow.  I think my three year old was trying to make sure his flowers had enough water!

Here they are singing Minnie Mouse's rainbow song and making sure they have one flower of each color.  The green became a problem.  I let them add my basil to their flowers, but then they decided that the green leaves were enough green.

A flower of every color...including my green basil.  We took it out after this picture because my three year old wanted his pink flowers on the stand.  I don't blame him!

When we got home we had red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink flowers.  We were excited to start planting.  We filled my plant "shelf" with a pot of flowers of each color.  We all got messy and had so much fun!  Now we have a rainbow of flowers in our backyard!

Here are our planting and gardening posts from this week.
