I Dream of an Elephant

Elephant Week

The second I got back from the library with elephant books this weekend, my three year old wanted to read I Dream of an Elephant by Ami Rubinger.  How can you blame him?  The cover is filled with elephants of all different colors!

I Dream of an Elephant is an adorable book that has simple rhymes discussing elephants of different colors.  Each color is left for the reader to guess by looking at the fun pictures, or using the rhyming word to help.  There is a blue, red, yellow, black, gray, and purple elephant.  The last page is amusing because the elephant is orange.  There is no rhyming word for orange, so the author writes, "I'll dream of this elephant some other time."

I really enjoy the printables from the blog, 1+1+1=1.  There is a terrific Animal ABC series.  I decided to see if there were any elephant printables for the letter E and I was excited to find a coloring sheet with elephants and color words on them.  My three year old did a great job matching his crayons up with the color words.  Of course, the matching ink color helped!

Here he is coloring a rainbow of elephants.

My kindergartner chose to color a rainbow elephant instead.

After seeing the rainbow elephant, my three year old wanted to make one too.  Here is my kindergartner helping his brother find all of the colors he needed.

To go with the rhyming words from our book of the day, my son colored a few elephants.  He made a blue elephant and then wrote some rhyming words for blue.  He came up with glue all on his own.  We worked hard thinking of some others.  He also made a pink elephant and came up with the words sink, think, and rink.  This was good practice for his spelling too!

Check back for some more posts on elephants this week!
