We just can't get enough of lemonade posts over here, so we continue with a great book that includes all things that my boys like (dragons, knights, giants, and lemonade) and a delicious lemonade cake to go with it!
This week, my boys and I have been reading the book The End by David LaRochelle. This is the second book we have read by David LaRochelle! Check out his site here, and our post Silly Math on another of his books, 1+1=5!
The End is a very funny book that is told backwards! The story begins with the sentence, "And they all lived happily ever after." The second my six year old heard that sentence he laughed out loud. My three year old didn't need to even hear that sentence. He saw the cover and was drawn in right away. In the story, a princess pours lemonade on a knight, a dragon cries, and a giant throws a teacup, but you don't find out why until you read the next page! Each page ends with the word because, and we would all stop to try and think of a reason that the giant might have thrown a temper tantrum, or the tomato might have rolled down the hill! When we were done reading the story, my six year old wanted me to read the book backwards, so it would be told in the "normal" order. We had a great time reading this, and it is a great book for sequencing activities, or cause and effect!
I decided to make a lemonade cake with the boys and we did our best to make it look like a "bowl of lemonade" just like the princess had in the story! Check out the recipe that we used here at Confessions of a Cookbook Queen.
My three year old loves to cook with me. I was taking a picture of him stirring and as I did that the spoon went straight to his mouth.
Here is our bowl of lemonade cake. We just made a bundt cake and turned it upside down so it was a bowl shape.
My six year old was in a rush to eat his lunch so he could have a piece of lemonade cake. He told me it was "kind of good". Kids just don't appreciate lemon the way I do! I thought the cake was very good and ate way too much of it this afternoon.
If you like lemonade be sure to check out our other lemonade book posts!

My children love that story too. We're reading Lentil next week, and I'm excited to read some of the other lemon books and do some extra activities with them. Thanks for the list of links!
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds awesome! My guy would love the book and the cake.
ReplyDeleteThose pictures make my mouth water for a slice of that lemonade cake. Yum! And how clever to turn it into a "bowl of lemonade" by flipping it over!
ReplyDeleteThank you for another great review of one of my books. I've got extension activities, puzzles, and even ideas for a backwards party at my website, in case any of your blog readers are interested:

And I might have to test out that lemonade cake. If your boys can make it, then I might have a chance at handling it too!
