As you can imagine the kids were very excited to find a package in the mail that they knew was filled with a book and activity from their book buddies! We opened up our package to find...
Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman!
After opening the package, we started reading the book. Officer Buckle and Gloria is a book about friendship, safety, and team work! In the story, a policeman visits schools to discuss safety tips. The students find his presentations rather boring until Officer Buckle brings his police dog, Gloria with him. When they start to present together the students roar with laughter and pay attention. Officer Buckle is so happy about the great reactions from students, until he sees that Gloria is the one who is getting all of the attention, not him. By the end of the story, Officer Buckle realizes that they have to work together to get the students' attention! My three year old laughed hysterically at all of the pictures of Gloria acting out safety tips. My six year old did a good job using the pictures to help with the comprehension of the story.
With safety on our minds, the boys and I sat down to make our own list of summer safety tips. We were given a banner and paper to help us make a safety banner. The boys started coloring.
We traced some letters on the scrap paper so our banner would say "Safe Summer" on one side.
On the other side of the banner we listed a safety tip on each triangle. My six year old also drew a picture for each one. Some of our summer safety tips included...
Walking at the Pool
Wearing Sunscreen
Looking Both Ways Before Crossing the Street
My three year old was excited to glue on our letters after he helped color the triangles.
Here is our completed banner of safety tips!
I couldn't get a great picture of it, but here is the other side of our banner. It is hanging in our hallway and is a good reminder to us about staying safe this summer!
When we finished our banner we also played charades. A great activity suggested by 3 Readers! We had never played charades before, but the boys had so much fun that it is sure to become a regular during our family game nights.
Thank you so much to 3 Readers for such a great book and activity to go along with it! Be sure to check out the blog for great literacy tips and Montessori inspired activities.
You can check out all of the participants in the Summer Book Exchange and visit their blogs for their summer book exchange posts!
Be sure to check back in about a week, when I will share the book and activity that we had so much fun preparing and sending to our book buddies at 3 Readers!
Here is a preview of one of the things we sent in the mail.

Thank you so much for participating in the Love Books Summer Exchange! I can't wait to see what book you shared with 3 Readers. It looks like your sons had lots of fun with this book and activities that she created for you!
