Summer Virtual Book Club - Don and Audrey Wood

JulySummerVirtualBookClub

We are big fans of the authors and illustrators Don and Audrey Wood, so when we saw that the Summer Virtual  Book Club for July was based on books by Don and Audrey Wood I ran to the bookshelf to get a book I knew my three year old would absolutely love!

We read The Little Mouse, The Red, Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear.  This is such a fun interactive book that includes a mouse that picks a strawberry and tries to keep it from the big hungry Bear.  The mouse tries to hide it, lock it up, and disguise the strawberry, but the reader has a plan to keep the strawberry out of the bear's hands!

A wonderful book inspired three fun activities in our house!

We started our book adventure with some delicious strawberry muffins!

My son got some practice cutting the strawberries.

He enjoyed mashing the fruit.

And, we all enjoyed eating the muffins.

What fun would reading this book be if we didn't have a game to go along with it?

We played keep away from the big hungry Bear with a red balloon decorated as a strawberry.  I wanted to use a beach ball, but it wasn't the right shape!  I taped green tissue paper to the top of the balloon and drew black seeds on it.

I don't know if it was more fun to be the Mouse or the Bear in this game!

Although, my three year old loves this book, he was a little upset that there was not a picture of the big hungry Bear.  The first time we read it he just kept asking where the bear was, so I decided to have the kids create their own big hungry Bear.

My six year old started tracing and drawing.  I think we should do this more often since he gets so frustrated with drawing!

We all made a big hungry Bear and we wanted him to have a mean hungry face!

  1. Anything with balloons is a hit at our house. I think my husband and son would have a blast playing strawberry keep away!

  3. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Years ago when I took my big kids to storytime, she read a book about a little mouse and a bear, but I couldn't remember much else about it. I've been wanting to find the book and you just made it easy for me.
