We are in a Book! by Mo Willems is a great book for beginning readers. There are lots of sight words, big font, and pictures that help tell the story. In this book, two friends, Elephant and Piggie, have a feeling that someone is looking at them. When they figure out it is a reader they have so much fun trying to get the reader to say a word. The word they choose is "Banana." For some reason this got both of my boys laughing hysterically (just like Gerald the Elephant). My six year old son also thinks it is funny when the elephant finds out that there is an end to the book and seems a little upset by it!
I have read this book three times and I love it more and more each time! No wonder this book is a Theodore Seuss Geisel Honor Book! My three year old loved the characters and was able to talk about the characters emotions by looking at the somewhat simple pictures that make this book so special! My six year old was able to read it on his own the first time! It gives him a lot of confidence to be able to read a book he hasn't even seen before and it helps me realize that he really has learned a lot about reading and decoding!
Tonight, when we read the book before bed, my son read Elephant's part and I read Piggie's part. The story is told with dialogue bubbles. If Elephant is talking the bubble is in gray and if Piggie is talking the bubble is in pink. This made it so easy for my son and I to turn the story into a play.
I am very anxious to go get some more of these Elephant and Piggie books so that we can make some puppets and have some puppet shows with the adorable characters!
Toddler Approved hosted a virtual book club on books by Mo Willems. Check it out to find some great Elephant and Piggie activities!
